How AI colourisation works

A black & white photo still holds all its light and shade — what's missing is the colour. PicReviver uses a colourisation model (DDColor) trained on millions of colour photographs to predict what colour each part of the scene most likely had, then paints it back over the original tones. Because it has learned how the world usually looks, it gets skies, water, foliage, skin and everyday objects convincingly right, rather than adding flat or random tints.

Common questions

How do I colourise a black & white photo for free?

Upload it to PicReviver, choose Colorize, and the AI adds realistic colour automatically — free for up to five photos at a time, no account, no watermark.

Is the colour realistic?

Yes. The model was trained on millions of colour photos, so skies, skin, foliage and everyday objects get natural, believable colour rather than random tints.

Can I colourise old, damaged photos?

Yes — and for the best result, restore the photo first to bring back detail, then colourise it.

What happens to my photos?
